Important scam notification !

In addition to security sites that I normally read on the world wide web and some mailing lists that I receive I have been hearing from friends about a new scam taking place both in email and over the telephone.

Someone will send an “official” looking email telling you that a bench warrant has been issued for your arrest because you failed to appear for jury duty. They will explain that this was a clerical error but need to be correct as soon as possible. They will then request that you send them your social security number and or your date of birth. In some cases they have also asked for a credit card or bank number information with any one of a number of reasons being given for the request.

All of this I have found out could also come in the form of a telephone call. Whatever you do PLEASE do not give out this kind of information in email or to someone that you do not know over the phone. If you have reason to believe there may be some validity to the callers claim ask them to contact your local police department and have an officer stop and discuss the matter with you in person. This will send the scam artists on their way looking for their next victim.

Any such requests that you receive via email simply ignore or bring to the attention of your Internet service provider. They will know how to handle the matter. I know of no government entity that will ask you to disclose confidential information in email or over the telephone.

Always be suspicious of anyone asking for your social security number, date of birth or any information related to your credit card or bank accounts. It is unfortunate that we live in a world where dishonest people feel the need to use technology to deprive others of their hard earned money but it is a fact of life. So you and I have to be aware that they are out there and take measures to protect ourselves and our friends and families.
